Astronomy is Women's Work

Is there a girl, aged 8 to 18, in your life? Bring her to our fun, FREE astronomy event for girls, where she'll learn that astronomy is women's work!

She can enjoy a variety of hands-on science activities, explore the universe in an entertaining planetarium show, and look through telescopes. She can find out how to pursue astronomy as a hobby or a career. Plus, she can meet and talk with some of New Mexico's awesome female astronomers and scientists, such as:

Jayne Aubele, Planetary Geologist & Vulcanologist
Education Specialist / Geologist - New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
Jayne is an expert on the volcanoes of Venus. She was geology technical advisor and on-camera geologist for the 2008 KNME-TV program, "The Sandias."

Penelope ("Penny") Boston, Astrobiologist & Cave Expert
Research Associate Professor, Cave & Karst Science - New Mexico Tech
Penny is an expert on the extreme environments of caves and their microbial life forms. Her work has been featured in documentaries on PBS, the National Geographic Channel, and the Discovery Channel.

Patricia ("Trish") Henning, Astronomer
Associate Professor / Director, Institute for Astrophysics - University of New Mexico
Trish conducts research in the areas of extragalactic astronomy, radio astronomy, galaxy clusters and superclusters, and material content of cosmic voids.

Rhian Jones, Meteorite Expert
Associate Professor, Earth & Planetary Sciences - University of New Mexico
Rhian is an expert on chrondrites, meteorites containing material dating to the origin of the solar system. She is former curator of UNM's Institute of Meteoritics, which includes the Meteorite Museum.

Laurel Ladwig, Planetarian
Planetarium Developer - New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science Laurel has over 20 years of presentation experience in public observatories and planetaria. She has created astronomy content for shows that have played in both North American and European digital theaters.

Aileen O'Catherine, Astronomy Writer
Writer, "Young Astronomer / Young Scientist" column in New Mexico Kids! Family Magazine
Aileen is an amateur astronomer and the former Education Specialist for the LodeStar Astronomy Center.

Becky Ramotowski, Astronomy Writer & Astrophotographer
Author, Secrets of Stargazing
Becky is an accomplished sky observer who recently made history by spotting the planet Mercury with the naked eye during daylight hours. Her astrophotos are regularly published by magazines and websites.

Eileen Ryan, Astronomer
Director & Project Scientist, 2.4-meter Telescope, Magdalena Ridge Observatory
Eileen is an expert on planetary geophysics, small solar system bodies, and asteroid collisions. The mission of the 2.4-meter telescope includes observing solar system objects that are in close proximity to Earth.

Debra Shepherd, Astronomer
ALMA Deputy Division Head / Associate Scientist - National Radio Astronomy Observatory
ALMA is the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, a large, powerful radio telescope array under construction in Chile's Atacama desert.
