Instructors

Judy Stanley is an amateur astronomer and the Education Officer for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (Very Large Array). She was formerly the Director of Education for the LodeStar Astronomy Center.

In addition to 20 years of classroom teaching experience, Judy has been a Project Astro educator since 1993 and has trained at the National Science Foundation's Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS).

Judy has served as the president of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS). In 2004, that organization awarded her the John Dobson Award for Excellence in Public Astronomy Education.

Barry Spletzer is a life-long amateur astronomer and the Senior Scientist for Robotics at Sandia National Laboratories.

As a veteran member of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society, Barry provides advice as well as fabrication assistance to amateur telescope makers and to the Society’s observatory. He has built about 20 telescopes, with an emphasis on portability and ease of use.

Barry has a PhD in Applied Mechanics and has taught celestial mechanics at the graduate level. In his spare time, he is a volunteer exhibit builder at the Explora Science Center.

Karen Keese is an amateur astronomer, writer, and night sky interpreter. She has nearly a decade of experience in public astronomy outreach.

Karen is the former Operations Manager for the LodeStar Astronomy Center and the former Deputy Director of the National Atomic Museum.
She has served as both vice president and public relations officer for
The Albuquerque Astronomical Society.

In addition to writing magazine articles, planetarium shows, and museum exhibits about astronomy, Karen publishes Whassup in the Milky Way?, a stargazing blog for beginners. She is at work on her first book, a recreational guide to naked-eye stargazing for dark-sky destinations.
